Postpartum Support in Phoenix: A Q&A with a Family Doula
When I had my daughter four years ago, photography was still just a hobby for me. I loved taking pictures, but I had no idea it would become my business just a few months later when my son was born.
What I also had no idea about? How much I would need support during those early postpartum days.
I knew about birth doulas because I'd actually been one during nursing school. But postpartum doulas? I honestly don't remember hearing about them at all. I wish I had.
There's this expectation that once you bring your baby home, you'll just figure it out. That maternal instinct will kick in and you'll know what to do. But the reality is so different. You're healing, you're exhausted, you're trying to learn your baby's cues, and everything feels overwhelming.
I felt that pressure personally, and now as a newborn photographer, I see it in families all the time. The relief when I tell them it's okay if their baby cries during our session. The gratitude when I share that their experience is completely normal.
That's why I'm so excited to introduce you to Kylee Alejandre from Phoenix Family Doulas. She's creating the kind of support I wish I'd known about - the kind that helps families rest, recover, and feel confident during those precious but challenging early weeks.
This conversation is part of my series highlighting local professionals who support growing families. Because no one should have to navigate postpartum alone.
Understanding Postpartum Doula Support in Phoenix
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what led you to this work?
I’m Kylee Alejandre, the owner of Phoenix Family Doulas and Doulas of Utah. I’ve spent the past several years building and leading teams that provide high-quality, professional doula support to families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This work started from a deep passion for improving the way families experience those early days because I’ve seen firsthand how transformative the right support can be. I truly believe no family should have to navigate postpartum alone.
How would you describe your role in supporting families during pregnancy or the newborn stage?
My role is to ensure families have access to consistent, reliable, and expert support when they need it most. Through our team, we provide both emotional and practical care, whether that’s helping parents get the rest they need, supporting newborn care, or simply offering reassurance during a time that can feel overwhelming.
What kind of families do you typically work with?
We work with a wide range of families: first-time parents, growing families, and those navigating more complex postpartum experiences. Many of our clients are busy, dual-income households who value having trusted, professional support so they can focus on recovery, bonding, and adjusting to life with their baby.
What New Phoenix Families Can Expect
What is something you wish more expecting parents knew before bringing their baby
home?
That you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. There’s this expectation that parents should instinctively know what to do, but the reality is that support, guidance, and rest are crucial.
What are some of the most common concerns or questions you hear from new parents?
A lot of it comes down to sleep, feeding, and wondering if what they’re experiencing is “normal.” Parents are often looking for reassurance, as well as practical strategies to help things feel more manageable.
How does support during the newborn stage make a difference for families?
It changes everything. When parents are supported, they’re able to rest, recover, and show up more confidently for their baby. It reduces overwhelm, improves mental health, and creates a much more positive postpartum experience overall.
Getting Started with Postpartum Support
When is the best time for parents to reach out to someone like you?
Ideally during pregnancy. Many families reach out in their second or early third trimester to ensure availability, especially for overnight support. That said, it’s never too late and we support families who reach out after baby arrives as well.
How do parents know if your services are a good fit for them?
If you’re feeling like you want more support, more rest, or more confidence going into postpartum, that’s usually a good indicator. Our services are designed to meet families where they are and provide the level of support they need.
What are a few simple ways parents can prepare for the newborn stage now?
- Set realistic expectations around sleep and recovery
- Build a support system ahead of time
- Focus on simplifying your home and daily routines
- Consider what kind of help will actually allow you to rest
Finding the Right Support for Your Family
What’s one moment from your work that really stayed with you?
There have been so many, but one that always stands out is seeing the shift in a parent who goes from feeling completely overwhelmed to finally feeling confident and at ease. That transformation is why we do this work.
What does “support” mean to you when it comes to new parents?
Support means showing up consistently, without judgment, and providing both practical help and emotional reassurance. It’s about making sure parents feel seen, cared for, and capable.
What would you say to a parent who feels like they should be doing everything on their own?
You were never meant to do this alone. Parenting was always meant to happen in community, and allowing yourself to receive support doesn’t make you less capable, it makes you better supported.

Conclusion
I'm so grateful to Kylee for sharing her expertise and passion for supporting families.
What strikes me most about Kylee's approach is how she normalizes the need for support. There's no judgment, no expectation that you should have it all figured out. Just practical, professional care that meets families exactly where they are.
As a photographer, I see how this kind of support makes such a difference. When families have had time to rest and adjust with help from professionals like Kylee's team, they're more likely to feel ready to open their homes for newborn photos. They're more present, more relaxed, and able to simply be with their baby.
My role is different but complementary. During our sessions, I create space for families to slow down in their comfortable home environment. Parents often share their birth stories, talk about how they're adjusting, or ask questions they've been wondering about. I listen without judgment and sometimes share my own experiences as a mom who's been there.
While Kylee and her doulas provide the practical and emotional support families need to thrive in those early weeks, I help capture the memories from this season that can feel like such a blur. Both of us understand that the postpartum period deserves thoughtful, caring support - whether that's helping you get the rest you need or preserving these fleeting moments you'll treasure forever.
This is the second post in my series featuring local professionals who support growing families. Keep an eye out for more conversations with practitioners who understand that becoming a family is a journey worth supporting every step of the way.
If you're expecting and thinking about newborn photos, I'd love to connect. And if you're feeling like you could use more support during those early postpartum days, I hope this conversation with Kylee gives you permission to reach out for the help you deserve.
