Meet Lindsay

If you're pregnant and already dreaming about those first cozy photos with your baby, you're not alone.

Most parents I work with start thinking about newborn photos pretty early. Maybe you've been scrolling through Instagram. Maybe a friend just posted the sweetest photos of their baby. And now you're wondering when you should actually book.

Timing matters more than you might think. Book too late and your photographer's calendar might be full. Wait until after your baby arrives and those sleepy newborn days will fly by faster than you expect.

This post will help you plan when to book newborn photos without the stress. You'll know exactly when to reach out, what to expect, and how to make sure those first precious weeks get captured.

Why Timing Matters in Newborn Photography

The first few weeks of your baby's life look different than any other stage. Those tiny features, the tiny yawns, the way they fit perfectly in your arms. It all changes so fast.

Newborn photos capture that fresh, brand-new feeling. Babies are sleepiest in their first two weeks. They curl up naturally. They're less affected by things like gas or fussiness.

But here's another reason timing matters: photographers book up fast.

I've had moms reach out the week after giving birth only to find my schedule packed. My heart always sinks a little. I know how much they want those early moments captured. And I hate having to say I'm full.

Peak baby seasons (like spring and fall) fill up even faster. If you wait until your baby arrives to book, you might miss out on your first choice photographer.

Booking early gives you one less thing to worry about when your baby comes. You already have a plan in place. You can focus on healing and snuggling your newborn.

The Ideal Time to Book Newborn Photos (and Why)

The sweet spot for booking is during your second trimester.

This is usually between weeks 14 and 27 of pregnancy. You're past the exhausting first trimester. You're not yet in the uncomfortable final stretch and you're starting to plan for your baby's arrival.

This timing gives you several benefits:

Your photographer will have availability. You get your first choice of photographer instead of settling for whoever has openings.

You have time to prepare. You can think about what you want to wear. You can tidy up the spaces in your home where we'll shoot. No rushing or last-minute stress.

You stay flexible. Booking early doesn't lock you into an exact date. Most photographers (including me) pencil in an estimated due date. Once your baby arrives, we finalize the actual session date.

Here's my rule of thumb: Book when you're still feeling good enough to dream about nursery paint colors.

If you're already in your third trimester and reading this, don't panic. Reach out anyway. I often have spots available and can usually squeeze in last-minute requests.

The Best Age for a Newborn Photo Session

Every parent Googles this question: How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

For lifestyle sessions like mine, the first one to three weeks is ideal. But honestly, up to six weeks still captures beautiful, connected moments.

Lifestyle newborn photography is different from posed studio sessions. I'm not trying to get your baby into complicated poses or deep sleep. I'm capturing real moments between you and your new baby.

That means we have more flexibility. If your baby is three weeks old instead of ten days, that's perfectly fine. If the first few weeks blur together and you don't book until week four, we'll still get gorgeous photos.

Here's what changes as babies get older:

Weeks 1-2: Baby is sleepiest. They curl up naturally. Those fresh newborn features are most visible.

Weeks 3-4: Baby is more alert. You might see some early eye contact. They're still small and snuggly.

Weeks 5-6: Baby has more personality showing through. They might track your face. They're filling out a bit.

Every stage has its own beauty. Sleepy or alert, snuggly or stretching. Your baby's story is worth capturing no matter what week we shoot.

What Happens if You Miss the "Perfect Window"?

Life with a newborn is unpredictable. Maybe you had a difficult delivery. Maybe you forgot to book ahead. Maybe the thought of scheduling anything felt overwhelming. Or maybe like me, infertility made you too anxious to book anything until your baby was safely here.

If you missed the early window, don't stress.

Older newborn sessions (four to eight weeks) have their own kind of beauty. Your baby has more personality by then. You might catch early smiles. There's more eye contact. Your baby looks at you with recognition.

Some of my favorite sessions happen with older newborns. Parents have settled into their rhythm a bit. They're less exhausted. The photos capture a different stage but they're just as meaningful.

Your baby's story is still unfolding. It's always worth capturing.

I've photographed babies at two months old who were technically past the "newborn" stage. Those sessions were still full of love and connection. The parents treasure those images just as much.

So if you're reading this and your baby is already a month old, reach out anyway. We'll create something beautiful together.

Tips from Lindsay (Your Photographer)

Here's what I want every expecting parent to know:

Plan early. Reach out once you've entered your second trimester. This gives us both plenty of time to prepare.

Keep it flexible. We'll schedule around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we'll adjust based on how you're feeling and when works best for your family.

Think about comfort. My sessions are relaxed and baby-led. There's no pressure. No rush. We move at your baby's pace. If they need to eat or be changed, we pause. Simple as that.

Prepare emotionally, not perfectly. You don't need a spotless home. You don't need a perfectly styled nursery. What matters most is the love and connection you share with your baby.

I've photographed families in homes with laundry on the couch. With toys scattered across the floor. With unmade beds. None of that shows up in your final images.

What does show up? The way you look at your baby. The gentleness of your touch. The quiet moments of new parenthood.

That's what we're really capturing.

FAQ: Common Questions about When to Book Newborn Photos

Q: How far in advance should I book my newborn photos?

A: Ideally in your second trimester. This secures your spot and makes planning stress-free.

Q: What if my baby arrives early or late?

A: Totally fine. Your session is flexible. We'll adjust based on your baby's actual arrival date.

Q: Do I need to know my exact due date?

A: Just an estimate helps. Once your baby's here, we'll pick the final session date together.

Q: Can you still do newborn photos if my baby is a month old?

A: Absolutely. Lifestyle sessions beautifully capture older newborns too. Every stage has its own sweetness.

Q: What if I go into labor early and forget to contact you?

A: Don't worry about it. Just reach out when you're ready. We'll find a time that works.

Q: Do I need to have everything ready before booking?

A: Nope. You just need to reach out and reserve your spot. We can talk through all the details later.
